Dave Reid
Trombone
Originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland, David Reid has been Principal Bass Trombonist of the Calgary Philharmonic since 2002, previously serving as Assistant Principal (tenor) Trombonist since 1984. A versatile low brass performer, he is also an active freelancer in various genres, performing on alto, tenor, bass and contrabass trombones as well as tuba and euphonium.
Since moving west to join the Calgary Philharmonic after a period of study in Toronto, he has participated in dozens of commercial recordings, including many with the Calgary Philharmonic, the critically acclaimed CD by Albertasaurus Tuba Quartet and sessions on the albums of stylistically diverse artists such as Jann Arden, Martijn van Galen, Steve Pineo, and Tim Tamashiro. As a jazz artist, he was member of Prime Time Big Band from 2001 to the end of its run, and now enjoys continuing the big band experience with the Ninth Avenue Band. On the music theatre scene, he has performed in many touring productions of Broadway shows as well as numerous local productions with Theatre Calgary. In 2010, he played first trombone on the soundtracks for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
Dave holds a Masters’ degree from Indiana University, where he first met his wife of over 20 years, Trish Bereti Reid, a Calgary Philharmonic bassist. Also active as an educator, Dave is a busy coach and clinician in Calgary area schools, and is on the faculty of Ambrose University.
